2012 is shaping up to be a classic for sports fans and although the London Olympics may be grabbing all the headlines, those looking beyond the City will find a vast range of exciting sporting events taking place across the world. From cycling and motor-biking, to snooker and surfing, whether you prefer relaxing in the stands or getting up close and personal to the action – heading out this summer is a way of keeping the festival of sport going while exploring beautiful locations across the globe!

If you’re still searching for an idea for a sporting summer holiday, check out the Elegant Resorts guide to some of the events taking place in 2012!

Tour de France Cyclist in France with mountain background

Tour de France, France – July

With hundreds of competitors and a route stretching from sun-drenched southern vistas to the spectacular eastern Alps, Le Tour is, put simply, the greatest cycling race in the world. Thousands of cycling fans converge on France each year to see their favourite team or cyclist compete – or to relax by the side of the course and drink in the surroundings as the cyclists fly by. The race is a great way to discover (or rediscover) France: with stages taking riders through idyllic villages and wide open countryside – and finishing at Paris’ famous Champs-Elysée – no two Tours are ever the same!

Red, yellow, pink and white balls on a snooker table

Australian Open Snooker, Australia – July

As a contest of skill, patience and anticipation, there are few sports more fascinating than snooker. The Australian Open is a ranking tournament, meaning the world’s best players are fighting it out not just for prize money, but for placing on the World Championship Tour. The Open is hosted in the Bendigo Stadium in Victoria – past home to Olympic events and, with a 2000-plus capacity, a dramatic, high-pressure setting for the tournament. Any fans looking for relief from the tension of the competition won’t be disappointed: the rich, diverse landscapes and environments of Victoria are amongst the most captivating in southern Australia – and represent an extraordinary way to round-off your trip.

Moto GP bikes racing

Moto GP, Italy – July

The Italian Moto GP takes place in at the scenic Mugello circuit – just a quick, rural drive from Florence. For the uninitiated,  Moto GP is the world’s premier motorcycle road racing competition, delivering high-speed thrills and spills for thousands of bike fans each year. Moto GP events always go beyond the race itself and there are plenty of ways to watch the action. Fans can select a range of guest packages, including breakfast and dinner at luxury restaurants and  bars – and even the chance to experience the buzz of the race up close with VIP tours through the pit lanes and paddocks. Don’t worry if you can’t make the Italian Moto GP – the racing continues throughout summer in the United States, the Czech Republic and San Marino!

European Masters, Switzerland – August

Hosted by the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, amidst the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the 2012 European Masters Tournament is set to be a high-point in an already memorable year of golf. Promising fierce competition, from Europe’s best golfers, the Crans-Montana resort lets fans follow play through a course surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery – or watch from the comfort of a luxurious VIP lounge with a superb view of the 18th hole. With a host of famous fans regularly joining the audience, and a unforgettable European setting, the Masters offers nail-biting drama set against the beauty of a unique Alpine landscape.

Surfing - blue sky, blue sea

ASP World Tour, French Polynesia, United States – August/September

The world of professional surfing is packed with glamour, glitz and action. The ASP Championship continues throughout the summer, in both the men’s and women’s categories, offering fans the opportunity to see the world’s surfing elite tackle breathtaking waves on beaches all over the world – including beautiful French Polynesia and sunny California. Watch the action from the sand while working on your tan or join in the party atmosphere in one of the special fan zones – either way, ASP tour events showcase one of the world’s coolest water sports and some its most exotic locations.

While the world’s focus may well be on London this year, the summer of 2012 offers so much more for fans willing to explore. Watching live sports is an exhilarating experience and travelling to an event, to get as close to the action as possible, only adds to the excitement of the occasion. Any international sports event is bound  to be popular – and although there are plenty of options for spectators wanting to get involved – it’s worth planning ahead to avoid disappointment if tickets look likely to sell out.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of sports – or aren’t even too familiar with the event you’re attending, heading out for a competition or tournament is a great excuse to discover parts of the world you might otherwise never have seen. 2012 is a unique year for sports – and with so much choice, in locations across the globe, you’ll be able to create a unforgettable holiday for you and your family!
