Excursions for an amazing Mauritius Holiday

Posted on 16. Nov, 2012 by in Destinations

Think of Mauritius and you’re likely to be dreaming about luxury bungalows standing tall above turquoise waters or the wonderful aromas of Creole cooking as you explore the island’s market towns – but Mauritius is so much more than just a beach destination! If you want a holiday which incorporates the stunning scenery of this tropical island as well as once-in-a-lifetime excursions that you’ll never forget, then Mauritius really is the place to go!

Mauritius has fascinating history which includes a period of Dutch settlement, control by the French as well as British administration – before becoming independent in 1968. If you’re interested in the history of the country, the Taste of Mauritius tour may be a good choice of excursion – it incorporates a guided visit of the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens, followed by a visit to Port Louis – the capital city founded by the French in 1735.

Alternatively, you could explore the south of the country – visiting the Mauritius Glass gallery to see the traditional methods applied to recycled glass, viewing the dormant volcanic crater or Trou aux Cerfs  and having a traditional lunch at an exclusive forest lodge. This is a great way to discover the huge range of activities on offer in Mauritius – from culturally significant places to naturally stunning scenery.Beach on Mauritius, Elegant Resorts

If you’re looking to find out more about the wildlife of the island, there’s a brilliant tour which incorporates the Nature and History. The starting point is the Naval Museum of Mahebourg in the south east of the island, and you’ll also visit the Ile aux Aigrettes, home to the Mauritius Wildlife Sanctuary, and the rare pink penguins! Next stop is La Reserve des Mascareignes – where you’ll find 2,000 Nile crocodiles and 700 giant tortoises. Keeping with the nature-theme, you’ll also be served lunch in a tropical garden – a perfect way to round of the trip!

Looking for something slightly more thrilling? How about a cable ride across the island’s breath-taking landscape? Dangling 30 metres above the ground, you’ll speed along a zip-line  over the rivers, forest, cane fields and banana plantations. This may not be for the faint of heart, but you’ll experience views that can’t be found anywhere else across the island!

For those who like the idea of seeing Mauritius from a different side, there’s always the opportunity to take a catamaran ride along the west coast. As well as basking in the sunshine whilst riding the waves, you could be swimming with dolphins and enjoying a barbeque lunch onboard. If you’re travelling with children, this is a magical way to make sure they never forget their Mauritius holiday!Mauritius with Elegant Resorts

An entirely unique experience, why not take a gentle stroll… along the bottom of the seabed?! Meet the creatures of the reef as you explore the bottom of the ocean, submerged between three and five miles beneath the surface! Discover all manner of Mauritian sea life, and see if you can have the fish eating from the palm of your hands – literally!

If you’re looking to make your holiday extra special – or if you’re planning a celebration whilst you’re away – one of the most dramatic ways to view the island is from a Helicopter. Prepare to be strapped in and rocket skywards as you’re taken on a rocket-stop tour of the island. With excursions lasting from 15 minutes to over an hour, this experience can be tailored to your desires. Whether you want to zoom over the top of your hotel, or hover above the forest as the sun sets into the horizon, you’ll experience the island in all its glory.
